Ingredients Explained
These ingredients are found in both products.
Ingredients higher up in an ingredient list are typically present in a larger amount.
Water. It's the most common cosmetic ingredient of all. You'll usually see it at the top of ingredient lists, meaning that it makes up the largest part of the product.
So why is it so popular? Water most often acts as a solvent - this means that it helps dissolve other ingredients into the formulation.
You'll also recognize water as that liquid we all need to stay alive. If you see this, drink a glass of water. Stay hydrated!
Learn more about WaterGlycerin is already naturally found in your skin. It helps moisturize and protect your skin.
A study from 2016 found glycerin to be more effective as a humectant than AHAs and hyaluronic acid.
As a humectant, it helps the skin stay hydrated by pulling moisture to your skin. The low molecular weight of glycerin allows it to pull moisture into the deeper layers of your skin.
Hydrated skin improves your skin barrier; Your skin barrier helps protect against irritants and bacteria.
Glycerin has also been found to have antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Due to these properties, glycerin is often used in wound and burn treatments.
In cosmetics, glycerin is usually derived from plants such as soybean or palm. However, it can also be sourced from animals, such as tallow or animal fat.
This ingredient is organic, colorless, odorless, and non-toxic.
Glycerin is the name for this ingredient in American English. British English uses Glycerol/Glycerine.
Learn more about GlycerinTocopherol (also known as Vitamin E) is a common antioxidant used to help protect the skin from free-radicals and strengthen the skin barrier. It's also fat soluble - this means our skin is great at absorbing it.
Vitamin E also helps keep your natural skin lipids healthy. Your lipid skin barrier naturally consists of lipids, ceramides, and fatty acids. Vitamin E offers extra protection for your skinโs lipid barrier, keeping your skin healthy and nourished.
Another benefit is a bit of UV protection. Vitamin E helps reduce the damage caused by UVB rays. (It should not replace your sunscreen). Combining it with Vitamin C can decrease sunburned cells and hyperpigmentation after UV exposure.
You might have noticed Vitamin E + C often paired together. This is because it is great at stabilizing Vitamin C. Using the two together helps increase the effectiveness of both ingredients.
There are often claims that Vitamin E can reduce/prevent scarring, but these claims haven't been confirmed by scientific research.
Learn more about Tocopherol1,2-Hexanediol is a multi-tasker ingredient. It acts as a preservative to increase shelf-life and can aid other preservatives in preventing microbe growth.
This ingredient also helps the skin retain moisture as a humectant.
In products that are water-based, this ingredient can help stabilize perfumes and fragrances. It can also help make the texture of products softer and more smooth.

This sunscreen WAS a dream when I used it back in 2022...
- Mild, pleasant scent

- I believe it actually improved my skin texture... possibly in combination with a few other products (clinique pep start, kate somerville recovery serum).
NOW, THAT BEING SAID:
About 2 years ago (2022/2023 timeframe) Biossance temporarily discontinued this product for over a year because suddenly a bunch of people started getting contact dermatitis and having reactions from it. I assume it was due to a formula change, although Biossance replied to a few bad reviews claiming innocence. Then, I think sometime in 2024, they brought it back with, you guessed it, another formula change!
All the reviews are now saying this product used to be great (which was my experience) but is not anymore. This is part of a greater trend of formerly amazing Biossance products going to shit, mainly due to formula changes, but also other nefarious activities like reducing the amount product while jacking up the price.
I did some light investigating their former parent company Amyris went bankrupt and sold them to THG in late 2023. Some people suspect this caused the decline, but I'm not so sure, given the sunscreen incident happened before the acquisition. What I think happened is once they built their brand (launched in 2016) and had thousands of loyal customers relying on their amazing products, they started to get greedy and thought they could pull a fast one on us.
And for these reasons I'm done. This product is getting 1 star, and sadly out of principle I will no longer be purchasing from Biossance -- even including the products whose formulas they haven't changed (yet).

I really wanted to love it!
I love the ingredients, the way it sits on my face, the dewiness it leaves on application, it even helps with the hyperpigmentation scars. BUT! It also makes me break out- which is such a bummer because other than that I really do love this product :(

Terrible for oily skin
It's my first expensive skincare product that I didn't finish and just got rid of it. It doesn't even absorb... After I apply it, the oily greasy mask just won't go away from my face!! It was a common situation for me with cheap products, but it isn't cheap ;-; And its glow effect is too much. Maybe it's great for dry skin, but it was so uncomfortable for my oily skin
