Why you should analyze your ingredients
There are tens of thousands of cosmetic ingredients out there. Even simple skincare products can easily have 20+ ingredients in their formulation.
Using our ingredient analyzer will help you get a complete understanding of the ingredients in any product. We'll help you find out the good and the bad of the ingredients list, and we'll back it up with detailed explanations of each ingredient.
We've worked hard to make sure our analyzer can detect different variations of ingredient names, but there's always a chance that a non-standard ingredient name isn't detected correctly. If you spot something like that, please let us know by emailing [email protected].
How To Check The Ingredients Of Your Beauty Products
Hey there! Weâve designed our ingredient checker to be the only place youâll need to know to get an understanding of the ingredients in any skincare or cosmetic product.
In this little guide, weâll be going over exactly how you can use our ingredient checker to get a complete breakdown of any product you wish.
Finding The Productâs Ingredients List
The first, and often one of the toughest parts of using any ingredient checker, is finding the correct list of ingredients that a product contains.
If youâve got a product in mind, you can likely find itâs ingredients on the website of the brand that creates it. For example, if I was looking for the ingredients of the Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner, the first place I would look is the official Good Molecules website.
If you canât find the ingredients on the brandâs official site, or if they donât have their own site, we suggest searching popular retailers (Ulta, YesStyle, Amazon) for the product. These sites will often have the ingredients for a product on itsâ listing.
SkinSort also has its own product database, which tracks the ingredients in over 5,000 different cosmetic products. Use our search bar (click the menu icon if youâre on mobile) to search our database. Thereâs a good chance weâve got your product in it!
For the purposes of this guide, weâll use the ingredients list for that Niacinamide Brightening Toner from Good Molecules:
Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Betaine, Arbutin, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Extract, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, Rehmannia Glutinosa Root Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Dextrin
After weâve found the ingredients list for a product, weâre ready to move onto the next step! đ

Now that your analysis has been run, youâre free to look through all the details!
Start scrolling down the page for a complete breakdown of the ingredients list that you analyzed. We start things off in the âProduct Infoâ section. Here, youâll be able to get some useful and commonly needed information - such as whether or not the ingredients list contains fragrances, sulfates, fungal acne triggers, and more!
Hereâs what the Product Info looks like for the ingredients list we entered in the previous step:

Continuing on, youâll see our Ingredient Details section. This section is designed to highlight the benefits, concerns, and notable ingredients contained within a product! Weâll tell you which ingredients are causing each item, and you can click on it to learn more.
Hereâs what that looks like with our sample analysis:

After taking in the ingredient details, scroll a bit further to reach our Ingredients List Explained section. Here, youâll be able to see more details about every ingredient in the product, and you can even click on the ingredient itself to learn more about it!
If youâve added liked or disliked ingredients to your SkinSort account, youâll also see an icon on the ingredients list here to let you know.

Which skincare ingredients should I avoid?
Figuring out which ingredients are good and bad for your skin is a challenge, and often requires a lot of trial and error before you can fully understand what is good/bad for your skin.
