Solvent

Propanediol is an all-star ingredient. It softens, hydrates, and smooths the skin.

It’s often used to:

Propanediol is not likely to cause sensitivity and considered safe to use. It is derived from corn or petroleum with a clear color and no scent.

Buffering, Masking

Sodium Citrate is the sodium salts of citric acid. In skincare, it is used to alter pH levels and acts as a preservative.

Its main functions are to maintain the pH of a product and neutralize metal ions.

The acidity of our skin is maintained by our glands and skin biome; normal pH level of skin is slightly acidic (~4.75-5.5).

Being slightly acidic allows our skin to create an "acid mantle". This acid mantle is a thin barrier that protects our skin from bacteria and contaminants.

Emulsifying, Emulsion Stabilising, Gel Forming

Xanthan gum is used as a stabilizer and thickener within cosmetic products. It helps give products a sticky, thick feeling - preventing them from being too runny.

On the technical side of things, xanthan gum is a polysaccharide - a combination consisting of multiple sugar molecules bonded together.

Xanthan gum is a pretty common and great ingredient. It is a natural, non-toxic, non-irritating ingredient that is also commonly used in food products.

Antioxidant, Masking, Skin Conditioning

Tocopherol (also known as Vitamin E) is a common antioxidant used to help protect the skin from free-radicals and strengthen the skin barrier. It's also fat soluble - this means our skin is great at absorbing it.

Vitamin E also helps keep your natural skin lipids healthy. Your lipid skin barrier naturally consists of lipids, ceramides, and fatty acids. Vitamin E offers extra protection for your skin’s lipid barrier, keeping your skin healthy and nourished.

Another benefit is a bit of UV protection. Vitamin E helps reduce the damage caused by UVB rays. (It should not replace your sunscreen). Combining it with Vitamin C can decrease sunburned cells and hyperpigmentation after UV exposure.

You might have noticed Vitamin E + C often paired together. This is because it is great at stabilizing Vitamin C. Using the two together helps increase the effectiveness of both ingredients.

There are often claims that Vitamin E can reduce/prevent scarring, but these claims haven't been confirmed by scientific research.

not a bad serum! helped with my skin barrier and redness and dark spots and dryness but it did give me a few bumps on my forehead, it went away but left a few which were annoying and kinda irritated my skin around my nose for the first few days of using but my skin got better and improved. i would probably go back to this serum but i feel that there are other better alternatives

I bought this when my skin barrier was damaged, hoping it would calm the irritation i have, but it made things worse. This serum broke me out badly. I think it might be due to the high concentration of ceramides, but it also contains PHA, so I’m not sure if it was a breakout or purging. However, when I stopped using it, my skin returned to normal. As a barrier serum, I don’t think this is Show more

You know how I realized this was my holy grail? When I was almost out of it, went to repurchase and there were ZERO in stock, anywhere. Online, Ulta - everywhere was out of stock. [This was around March 2023. Must've been a logistics issue!]. What made the situation even more dire was that I was moving from the United States to Japan, and feared I wouldn't be able to purchase the product.

Not amazing, not terrible. Using it up since I have it, but haven’t noticed any significant improvements. It’s not causing any negative effects though.
