Madecassoside

Explained

Madecassoside is one of four active compounds found in Centella asiatica and is one of the main reasons Centella is so effective at calming irritated skin and supporting the moisture barrier.

There's a solid body of peer-reviewed research backing Madecassoside for several skin benefits. Studies have found:

  • Madecassoside significantly inhibited pro-inflammatory cells exposed to acne-causing bacteria.
  • Boosted skin hydration by increasing key moisturizing factors in skin cells.
  • Significantly reduced UV-induced melanin after 8 weeks of application on artificially tanned skin.
  • It targets excess pigmentation from UV damage and doesn't affect melanin in non-irradiated skin, so it's not a bleaching agent.
  • Using 5% Vitamin C + 0.1% Madecassoside on photoaged skin showed improvements in wrinkles, firmness, elasticity, and hydration compared to a standard moisturizer.
  • Stimulates the synthesis of both type I and type III collagen.
  • One study of subjects with sensitive skin found using centella had no serious adverse effects. There were a couple of cases of mild, temporary acne that resolved on its own within a week.

Madecassoside pairs well with other hydrating or antioxidant ingredients like Ascorbic Acid or Hyaluronic Acid.
