Madecassoside
Antioxidant
Antioxidants inhibit oxidation, or a chemical reaction that leads to cell-damage and are found to correct signs of aging, brighten skin tone, and some antioxidants help stimulate collagen.
Helps with Anti-Aging
Aging skin results from decreased collagen production, sun damage, and slower cell turnover. Proven anti-aging ingredients include retinoids (most effective), vitamin C, peptides, and AHAs. Consistent SPF use prevents further damage.
Reduces Irritation
Some soothing ingredients help calm irritated skin and strengthen your skin barrier. They're particularly beneficial after during flare-ups or for chronically sensitive skin. Look for products with multiple calming ingredients for best results.
Reduces Redness
Some ingredients are commonly used to help calm visible redness and soothe irritated skin. While they can be effective for many people, results can vary depending on the cause of redness and individual skin sensitivity. If redness persists or worsens, it's best to check with a dermatologist.
Good for Scar Healing
Some ingredients are commonly used to support the skin's natural healing process and improve the appearance of scars over time. While results can vary, they may help with texture, discoloration, and overall skin recovery.
Good for Texture
The most common cause of textured skin is a build up of dead skin cells. The easiest way to get rid of textured skin is to exfoliate and give your skin the proper nutrients.
Helps with Barrier Repair
Some ingredients support barrier repair by reinforcing your skin’s protective layer, locking in moisture, and defending against irritation and environmental stress.
Explained
Madecassoside is one of four active compounds found in Centella asiatica and is one of the main reasons Centella is so effective at calming irritated skin and supporting the moisture barrier.
There's a solid body of peer-reviewed research backing Madecassoside for several skin benefits. Studies have found:
- Madecassoside significantly inhibited pro-inflammatory cells exposed to acne-causing bacteria.
- Boosted skin hydration by increasing key moisturizing factors in skin cells.
- Significantly reduced UV-induced melanin after 8 weeks of application on artificially tanned skin.
- It targets excess pigmentation from UV damage and doesn't affect melanin in non-irradiated skin, so it's not a bleaching agent.
- Using 5% Vitamin C + 0.1% Madecassoside on photoaged skin showed improvements in wrinkles, firmness, elasticity, and hydration compared to a standard moisturizer.
- Stimulates the synthesis of both type I and type III collagen.
- One study of subjects with sensitive skin found using centella had no serious adverse effects. There were a couple of cases of mild, temporary acne that resolved on its own within a week.
Madecassoside pairs well with other hydrating or antioxidant ingredients like Ascorbic Acid or Hyaluronic Acid.
