1,2-Hexanediol is a synthetic liquid and another multi-functional powerhouse.
It is a:
- Humectant, drawing moisture into the skin
- Emollient, helping to soften skin
- Solvent, dispersing and stabilizing formulas
- Preservative booster, enhancing the antimicrobial activity of other preservatives
Artemisia Annua Extract comes from sweet wormwood or the annual mugwort. This plant is best known historically as the source of the anti-malarial drug, artemisinin.
In skincare, this ingredient has skin soothing and conditioning properties that make it a great choice for sensitive, reactive, or acne-prone skin.
The extract is rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and sesquiterpenes that do most of the work in a formula.
A 2020 human clinical trial found that cosmetics containing Artemisia Annua Extract increased stratum corneum hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss while also calming redness and inflammation over four weeks of use.
Lab and animal studies build on this as well, showing the extract reduces inflammatory signals, boosts a protein important for barrier health (filaggrin), and has anti-itch/antibacterial activity (including against C.acnes, the bacteria linked to breakouts).
There's also a well-documented artemisinin-free version called Artemisia Naphta oil which performed well at 1% in a small human trial for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
On concentrations, published research clusters around 1% for finished products.
The ingredient is generally well-tolerated, but people with Asteraceae or ragweed allergies may want to patch test first.

Lab tests on human skin cells show Asiatic Acid tells your skin to make more collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and bouncy.
It also calms inflammation and acts as an antioxidant so it can help skin heal faster, rebuild itself, and repair a damaged barrier.
And on naming, even though "acid" is in the name, it's nothing like an AHA or BHA exfoliant. It's a gentle firming and soothing ingredient that supports your skin barrier.
Concentration-wise, Asiatic Acid is potent at very low doses and usually shows up as a small fraction of a broader centella extract.
Analyses of centella material put Asiatic Acid reported in the range of 0.2-3% of the extract.
This ingredient is non-sensitizing and guinea pig sensitization testing also found it to be a weak sensitizer. That means the risk of acquiring contact sensitivty is quite low.
Allergic contact dermatitis does exist but is also very rare; documented cases tend to involve prolonged use on broken skin plus co-sensitization to fragrance ingredients.

Needless to say, this ingredient shouldn't replace your sunscreen. But it is a great supportive ingredient that you can already find in many sunscreens and antioxidant serums.

So what does it actually do?
Its main job is chelation; this is a fancy word to say it grabs onto metal ions and neutralizes them. This is because even purified water in cosmetics contains trace amounts of metals that can cause big problems in a formula.
These trace metals can break down actives faster, cause discoloration, promote rancidity in oils, and make preservatives less effective. Trisodium EDTA binds to these metals and takes them out of the equation so your products can stay stable and effective for longer.
