Ingredients Explained
These ingredients are found in both products.
Ingredients higher up in an ingredient list are typically present in a larger amount.
Butyrospermum Parkii Butter is a plant lipid from the fruit of the Shea Tree. It is an effective skin hydrator and emollient.
Emollients help soothe and soften your skin. It does this by creating a protective film on your skin. This barrier helps trap moisture and keeps your skin hydrated. Emollients may be effective at treating dry or itchy skin.
Shea butter is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight free-radicals, or molecules that may harm the body. It is also full of fatty acids including stearic acid and linoleic acid. These acids help replenish the skin and keep skin moisturized.
While Shea Butter has an SPF rating of about 3-4, it is not a sunscreen replacement.
Shea butter may not be fungal acne safe. We recommend speaking with a professional if you have any concerns.

Castor Oil helps moisturize the skin. It is rich in a fatty acid called ricinoleic acid. This fatty acid helps prevent moisture loss on the skin. This helps keep your skin soft and hydrated. Ricinoleic acid also has anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties.
Besides hydrating the skin, castor oil is also used to hydrate hair. By keeping the hair shaft moisturized, breakage is decreased. More studies are needed to show castor oil's effective on stimulating hair growth.
Castor oil is created by cold-pressing castor seeds and then purifying the oil with heat. It was used in Ancient Egypt as fuel in lamps and to help treat eye irritation.
The term 'fragrance' is not regulated in many countries. In many cases, it is up to the brand to define this term. For instance, many brands choose to label themselves as "fragrance-free" because they are not using synthetic fragrances. However, their products may still contain ingredients such as essential oils that are considered a fragrance.

As a wax-like substance, Hydrogenated Castor Oil acts as an emollient. Emollients help keep your skin stay soft and smooth by creating a barrier. This barrier helps trap moisture.

e.l.f. has become increasingly popular in recent years for creating quality dupes of popular mid-range and high-end makeup products, such as Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter. i get the impression that this product is trying to do the same for the Laneige Lip Glowy Balm (or maybe it’s closer to the Summer Fridays lip butter, or the Glossier Balm Dotcom, or the Rhode lip treatment? maybe all of those?)
i decided to try this e.l.f. lip balm out in the flavor ‘Vanilla Frosting’. the smell reminds me of a vanilla-scented candle. it goes on fairly smooth, and i personally don’t have any sort of allergic reaction to it.
it’s worth noting, however, that the tube is very small. at 0.21 oz or 6 grams, it’s significantly smaller in size than the Laneige Lip Glowy Balm (0.35 oz or 10 grams), the Glossier Balm Dotcom (0.5 oz or 14 grams), and most other comparable products. maybe i’m just too used to the Glossier balm, but this one is somewhat less pleasant to apply. my lips aren’t even particularly full (probably slightly fuller than the average white woman), so i could see this being a bit more difficult to apply if you have fuller lips. on the other hand, if you have thin lips, i could see the applicator being pretty much perfect. however, this is a fairly minor gripe for a $4 USD product.
