Diisostearyl Malate is an emollient and most often used in lip products. It comes from isostearyl alcohol, a fatty acid, and malic acid, an AHA.
As an emollient, Diisostearyl Malate helps create a thin film on your skin to trap moisture in. This helps keep your skin soft and smooth.

I use this every other day as I don't have very dry chapped lips (I live in a humid climate). I did like this when I first used it for a couple of days. But after awhile, it doesn't do much for me anymore. I still wake up with some dryness and flakiness on my lips.
