Diatomaceous Earth is an exfoliant. It can be good for oily skin.

Humectant

Glucose is a simple sugar (a monosaccharide). In skincare, it is mostly a humectant and skin conditioning agent.

Mechanistically, it has multiple hydroxyl groups that hydrogen-bond to water. This pulls moisture into the upper layers of skin to keep the surface soft and hydrated.

It's worth knowing sugars are already a natural component of the skin's NMF (natural moisturizing factor) so it's a molecule that your stratum corneum is well-acquainted with.

Just so you know, glucose is hydrophilic (water-loving) and the stratum corneum is a strong barrier to hydrophilic compounds. This just means penetration is slow and most of the action is happening on the surface.

Gram-to-gram, glucose is not as efficient as a humectant as glycerin. This is why you'll likely see glycose paired with stronger humectants for a bigger hydration payoff.

In skincare, glucose is typically derived from corn or other starch sources.

Algin is the sodium salt of alginic acid, a sugar-based polymer pulled out of brown seaweed.

In cosmetics, it's a workhorse thickener, binder, and film former rather than an active; it's mostly there for texture and slip.

Industry survey data collected by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review put its maximum reported use at 50% in paste masks and mud packs with reported use going all the way down to 0.001% in aerosol products. Most formulas sit at the low end since a little goes a long way as a thickener.

Allergy-wise, this ingredient is about as low-risk as it gets topically:

The "algae causes acne" idea comes from three places that got tangled together:

None of that transfers to a purified polysaccharide like algin. Clogged pores are a lipid problem where an ingredient has to get into the follicle and mix with sebum to form a comedone. Algin is a big, water-loving sugar chain that does neither; it gels and then sits on the surface as a film until it's rinsed off.

Sodium Benzoate is a preservative. It's used in both cosmetic and food products to inhibit the growth of mold and bacteria. It is typically produced synthetically.

Both the US FDA and EU Health Committee have approved the use of sodium benzoate. In the US, levels of 0.1% (of the total product) are allowed.

Sodium benzoate works as a preservative by inhibiting the growth of bacteria inside of cells. It prevents the cell from fermenting a type of sugar using an enzyme called phosphofructokinase.

It is the salt of benzoic acid. Foods containing sodium benzoate include soda, salad dressings, condiments, fruit juices, wines, and snack foods.

Studies for using ascorbic acid and sodium benzoate in cosmetics are lacking, especially in skincare routines with multiple steps.

Allantoin is a soothing ingredient known for its protective and moisturizing properties; it's basically a quiet workhorse ingredient you can find in a huge range of cosmetics.

Though it can be derived from the comfrey plant, allantoin is produced synthetically for cosmetic products to ensure purity.

Research shows it can encourage your skin cells to turn over and renew by stimulating keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation.

It also has mild keratolytic properties to help loosen and shed dead skin cells without being harsh.

Studies also suggest allantoin can help calm inflammation by dialing down some of the chemical signals your skin sends out when it is irritated.

This ingredient is typically used in the 0.1-0.5% range, and the FDA recognizes it as a skin protectant in OTC products up to 2%.

Overall, allantoin is a wonderful addition to most routines; it is stable across a wide pH range (~4-8), works well with other ingredients, and is considered non-sensitizing/non-irritating.

Fun fact: Allantoin is naturally occurring in comfrey root, beets, chamomile, and wheat sprouts. Our bodies even produce it as a byproduct of uric acid metabolism.

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. It is a long sugar chain that is naturally found in your skin, joints, and connective tissue that maintains hydration and elasticity.

In skincare, it works as a humectant. It pulls water from the environment and deeper layers of skin and binds it to the surface.

Interestingly, the size of the molecule affects its behavior:

Some clinical evidence links low molecular weight versions to improved wrinkle depth, elasticity, anti-inflammatory effects, and barrier repair.

Many serums use a blend of both weights so you can get surface hydration plus longer-lasting and deeper effects.

You'll typically see concentrations between 0.1-2% for this ingredient.

Glycerin (or glycerol) is a compound naturally found in your skin. It's a powerhouse humectant that pulls water into the stratum corneum.

Topically, glycerin does several things at once:

Your skin makes glycerin on its own (mostly from sebaceous oil breakdown) and shuttles it to your outermost layer of skin, or your epidermis, via aquaporin-3.

Aquaporin-3 is a transporter that is essential for normal skin hydration, elasticity, and repair. Interestingly, mice lacking in AQP3 have dry and less elastic skin that can be fully corrected with glycerin.

This ingredient is non-irritating, plays well with almost every ingredient, and works across all skin types. Typical use is anywhere between 3-10% but can go up to 79% in some leave-on products.

Just know very high concentrations (>40%) can feel tacky in low humidity.

Glycerin is the name for this ingredient in American English. British English uses Glycerol/Glycerine.

1,2-Hexanediol is a synthetic liquid and another multi-functional powerhouse. 

It is a:

Oryza Sativa Bran Extract comes from the outer layer of a rice kernel. It is a byproduct of milling rice, or the operation to produce a whole grain rice product.

This ingredient has moisturizing properties due to its components of polysaccharides and omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains calcium, selenium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc.

Oryza Sativa Bran Extract contains numerous antioxidants such as ferulic acid. Antioxidants help fight free-radical molecules. Free-radical molecules are capable of damaging our cells and other genetic material.

Skin Conditioning

This ingredient comes from the giant kelp that grows in cold waters off Chile, California, South Africa, and New Zealand (and it's one of the fastest growing organisms on the planet).

It's a carbohydrate ingredient (~49% carbohydrates as the dominant macronutrient) that has one function: condition the skin.

Here's what the research shows:

In-vitro shows it calms inflammation signals; the most skin-relevant study put a kelp extract on human skin cells and then hit them with inflammatory triggers. The kelp-treated cells produced less of the inflammatory messenger molecules that normally get released.

In a realistic 3D model of skin, the pre-treated tissue held onto its cell-to-cell "seals" better and leaked less water (basically the lab version of a strong vs. weak skin barrier).

Two honest notes: the seal effect only showed up in the 3D model and at higher doses the extract started harming the cells (so more might not be better)

Fucoidan is why kelp gets talked about; it's the sulfated sugar molecule that brands like to name-drop. When four fucoidans were compared, the one from Macrocystis pyrifera was the most active. Just know this was from immune research and not skincare research.

On real people, the numbers look good (with an asterisk). The strongest evidence is all on Macrocystis Pyrifera Ferment inside one company's finished serum and not the plain extract.

Using it twice daily for eight weeks raised skin moisture 16 percent and cut water loss through the skin by 11 percent. A stripping test that repeatedly tapes and peels the skin surface found treated skin held up 30 percent better.

The standout result: half the face was prepped for three weeks and then the whole face got a 70 percent glycolic peel. The prepped side had recovered 71 percent of its barrier versus 23 percent untreated two hours later. A separate review also reported less visible redness and improvement in visible aging measures.

Three asterisk: It's the ferment, not the extract. The kelp isn't necessarily doing all the work since it's the whole formula. And it was funded by The Estée Lauder Companies with several authors on staff.

There's no fixed concentration published for this ingredient but real-world use survey shows this ingredient can be used up to 36%. There's an extra wrinkle for leave-on products since these extracts are usually supplier pre-diluted in water, glycerin, or propanediol.So "5%" on the bottle might mean under 1% for actual kelp solids.

On allergies: kelp is naturally iodine-rich, so people with a known iodine or seafood ingredient sensitivity should patch test.

You'll see algae listed as a 5/5 on a lot of pore-clogging charts and that number doesn't come from anywhere; it's not in the original rabbit-ear studies that most comedogenic ratings trace back to.

The reasoning behind the reputation is that seaweed is high in iodine and iodine can trigger acne-like breakouts when eaten. This traces back to a 1976 letter in Archives of Dermatology describing two women whose breakouts cleared after they stopped taking high-dose kelp supplements orally.

And the reaction of these two women wasn't clogged pores at all: it was an iodine-triggered pustular rash. Later research found normal dietary iodine doesn't meaningfully affect acne either and nobody has shown topical algae delivers enough iodine to matter.

What we do have is dozens of brown and red algae ingredients found to be non-irritating and non-sensitizing, and a handful of studies that found algae compounds may actually help acne.

However, plenty of people do report breaking out from algae-containing products. Skin is individual and it's worth avoiding if yours has reacted to algae before.

Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract is an extract of the roots of Licorice. It has been found to have several benefits such as skin hydrating, conditioning, and soothing.

One component, glabridin, has extra potent antioxidant and soothing properties. It has also been found to block pigmentation from UVB rays in guinea pigs.

Licorice Root also contains a flavonoid. Flavonoids are a natural substance from in plants. Flavonoids also have antioxidant properties.

Another component, glycyrrhizin, has been found to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits. This may make licorice root extract effective at treating acne. However, more research is needed to support this.

Liquiritin is one of the flavone compounds found in licorice. It has been found to help lighten skin by preventing tyrosinase from reacting with tyrosine. When the two react, protein is converted to melanin. Melanin is the substance in your body that gives your features pigmentation.
