How to Format Ingredients for the SkinSort Checker

SkinSort’s web Ingredient Checker helps you understand what each ingredient in your skincare product does. To get the best results, it’s important to format your ingredient list correctly.

Here’s how to make sure your list works with the checker.

Best Format: Comma-Separated INCI Names

To get the most accurate results, copy and paste the full official ingredient list; it can usually found on the product packaging or brand website. Each ingredient needs to be separated by a comma.

Example of a good format: Aqua, Glycerin, Ascorbic Acid, Niacinamide, Tocopherol

This is called the INCI format (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). It’s the standard format used on product packaging and is usually required by law in several countries. This format works best with our checker.

Common Names (Like “Vitamin C”) Might Work

Our checker recognizes many common names like:

  • “Vitamin C” (for Ascorbic Acid or its derivatives)
  • "Green tea”
  • "Shea butter"

That said, using the full INCI names like Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract or Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract will always give you the most accurate match.

Formats That May Not Work

Avoid these formats, as they can cause errors or prevent results from showing up:

  • Ingredients listed with line breaks or random symbols
  • Including extra descriptions or emojis
  • Copying marketing blurbs instead of the actual ingredient list

Example of a format that might not work: Water
Glycerin
Vitamin C (brightening)
Retinol (anti-aging)

Where to Find the Right Ingredient List

  1. Check the back of your product packaging
  2. Look for the ingredients on the brand’s website
  3. Search for the product on SkinSort as we may already have it listed!
