How to Track Product Expiry

Last updated about 12 hours ago

Skincare products don't last forever once they're opened. Over time, they can become less effective and may lose their stability. That's why SkinSort lets you track a product's Period After Opening (PAO) or specific expiration date, so you'll always know when it's time to replace a product.

What is Period After Opening (PAO)?
Period After Opening (PAO) is the amount of time a product remains safe and effective after it has been opened.

You can usually find the PAO on the product packaging as an open jar icon with a number followed by the letter M, for example:
6M – Good for 6 months after opening
12M – Good for 12 months after opening
24M – Good for 24 months after opening

Once you record when you opened a product, SkinSort uses its PAO to automatically calculate its expiry date.

Expiration Date
Some products also have a specific expiration or best-before date printed on the packaging. If a product has a specific expiration date, you can enter that date directly in SkinSort instead of using its PAO.

How to track a product's expiry
On the SkinSort Web:

  1. Click Shelves.
  2. Open your Owned shelf.
  3. Select the product you'd like to track and click Track Expiration.
  4. Choose the date you opened the product.
  5. Select how you'd like to track the product's expiration: Open jar (PAO): Enter the product's Period After Opening (PAO) from its packaging. Printed Date: Enter the expiration date printed on the product packaging.
  6. Click Start Tracking.

On the SkinSort App:

  1. Tap Shelves.
  2. Open your Owned shelf.
  3. Select the product you'd like to track and tap Track Expiration.
  4. Choose the date you opened the product.
  5. Select how you'd like to track the product's expiration: Open jar (PAO): Enter the product's Period After Opening (PAO) from its packaging. Printed Date: Enter the expiration date printed on the product packaging.
  6. Tap Start Tracking.

Once you've added the required expiration information, SkinSort will display the product's expiry date beneath the product on your Owned shelf. If you enter a PAO, SkinSort calculates the expiry date based on your opening date. If you enter a specific expiration date, SkinSort uses the date you provided.

Expiry reminders
Once an expiry date has been added, SkinSort can notify you:

  • 14 days before a product expires
  • On the day it expires

You can receive reminders through:

  • Push notifications
  • Email
  • In-app notifications

You can manage your notification preferences at any time in your SkinSort Settings.

Can I edit the expiration information later?
Yes. You can update the opening date, PAO, or specific expiration date at any time. If you make any changes, SkinSort will automatically update the product's expiry date.
