Emollient, Skin Conditioning

Isostearyl Isostearate is a plant-based and vegan emollient ester made by reacting Isostearyl Alcohol and Isostearic Acid.

It helps improve how the product spreads on skin, acts as a binding agent for makeup powders without modifying pigment color, and softens skin while helping it hold onto water.

This ingredient is very interesting as a hydrator; most moisturizers are either occlusives, humectants, or emollients. Isostearyl isostearate works through another route named "internal occlusion" by the head researcher.

Isostearyl isostearate nudges the skin's own lipids into a denser, more tightly packed arrangement. Packing the deeper layers of the stratum corneum together more efficiently means less water is able to escape.

This is a barrier-improving mechanism that hadn't been described before and plastic occlusion stress tests confirmed it improved the skin's water-permeability barrier function

Just one thing worth noting from the same review: this ingredient increased the penetration rate of a test drug through excised human skin. Though this ingredient is not classified as a penetration enhancer, it does interact with the barrier rather than sitting totally inert on top.

Fungal acne:
The Malassezia yeast feeds on fatty acids and esters in the C11-24 range. Since both halves of this molecules are C18, it may not be fungal acne safe.

Decyl Isostearate isn't fungal acne safe.

Ethylhexyl Palmitate, also known as octyl palmitate, is created from 2-ethylhexyl alcohol and palmitic acid.

In cosmetics, it plays many roles:

One thing worth noting: a controlled study found this ingredient applied under occlusion to acne-prone subjects increased microcomedones. Just keep in mind this was under occlusive conditions and don't reflect how most products are used day-to-day.

For most people, this is a well-tolerated and lightweight ingredient.

This ingredient may not be fungal acne safe because it is an ester of palmitic acid, a C16 fatty acid that falls within the C11-24 range that Malassezia can metabolize.

Emulsion Stabilising

Cera Microcristallina, aka microcrystalline wax, is a petroleum-derived wax that helps thicken texture and stabilize the oils in formulas.

It also has mild occlusive properties that creates a film on skin to slow down water loss.

The CIR Expert Panel has concluded this ingredient to be safe as used in cosmetics.

This ingredient is refined to a cosmetic grade with high purity. It is chemically inert, stable, and doesn't clog pores (petroleum has a comedogenic rating of 0).

Malassezia feeds on fatty acids roughly in the C11-24 range and this ingredient contains none of those. Since there's no plausible food source for it here, this ingredient is fungal acne safe.

Ethylene/Propylene Copolymer is an exfoliant.

Emulsion Stabilising

Microcrystalline Wax is derived from petroleum through a de-oiling process, then highly refined and purified before use in cosmetics.

In skincare formulations, it is used to improve texture and create a smooth, even consistency. It also helps stabilize products by preventing ingredients from separating.

Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate is a synthetic powder used as an absorbent, thickener, and anti-caking agent.

As an absorbent, it is great at mattifying skin by soaking up the oil. This is why you'll find it in a range of products from makeup to moisturizers.

This ingredient is considered a modified starch. Starch can also be found naturally in plants.

One study from 1991 found that 5% of this ingredient enhanced titanium dioxide SPF by as much as 40%. The study found 1% titanium dioxide had a 5.6 SPF and adding 5% of aluminum starch octenylsuccinate boosted it to an SPF of 8.1

Although “aluminum” in an ingredient name can raise red flags for some consumers, the form and usage context matter significantly. For typical topical applications, there is no substantial evidence of health risks - such as cancer, neurotoxicity, or systemic “aluminum overload.”

Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) is a lightweight silicone that mostly acts as an emollient and solvent in cosmetics. Its the reason your products feel silky, fast-spreading, and non-greasy.

Since D5 is volatile, it does its thing and then evaporates off the skin quickly.

The safety profile of this ingredient is reassuring; the US CIR Expert Panel concluded D5 is safe as used in cosmetics and Health Canada concluded that D5 is not harmful to human health or the environment as currently used in cosmetics

There's a study that people mention about D5 in a rat study showing tumors. This study is related to long-term inhalation of high D5 levels.

Regulatory bodies have judged this study to be not applicable in topical skincare since skin absorption of D5 is very low and we're not really inhaling huge amounts of D5.

The only restriction for this ingredient is environmental. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) restricted D5 in wash-off cosmetics at or above 0.1% due to their persistence in water.
