Emollient, Humectant, Skin Conditioning

Hydrogenated Soybean Oil is soybean oil (Glycine soja) that has been chemically treated with hydrogen gas to convert it's naturally unsaturated fats into saturated ones.

This turns a liquid oil into a more stable, semi-solid, waxy substance.

In formulas, it acts as a skin conditioning agent, emollient, and humectant that helps slow moisture loss from skin.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has evaluated it and concluded it safe as used in cosmetics, citing low systemic toxicity, a long history of safe use, and low irritation/sensitization potential.

There's no mandatory maximum-use concentration and concentrations range from low single digits to 100%.

Soy is a common food allergen but cosmetic-grade Hydrogenated Soybean Oil is heavily refined. This means the proteins responsible for most soy allergic reactions are largely removed during that processing.

However, people with a known soy allergy should still patch test before use since trace protein residues can vary by manufacturing source.

Regular soybean oil (the non-hydrogenated version) has been rated as moderately comedogenic on the Fulton rabbit-ear scale; this rabbit-ear model is increasingly seen as a poor predictor of real-world human pore-clogging since it uses undiluted ingredients on rabbit ear skin rather than realistic concentrations on human skin.

Later studies also revealed inconsistent results when the rabbit ear model was applied to human skin.

This ingredient shows up on a lot of "pore-clogging" lists but there's no real evidence behind that. It doesn't even have a comedogenic rating from an actual study; the numbers you'll find online come from blogs citing other blogs.

Some people still find it breaks them out. So if that's you, definitely trust your skin.

Because this ingredient is a saturated triglyceride, it may not be fungal acne safe. This is because Malassezia breaks down sebum triglycerides into fatty acids it can consume, making this ingredient a possible source for the yeast.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil isn't a single oil. It's the labeling name for a blend of plant-derived oils that can include canola, rapeseed, safflower, sunflower, sesame, palm, palm kernel, cotton, soybean, olive, and more.

Hydrogenation is the processing step that reduces or removes the unsaturated bonds in the fatty acids to make the oil more resistant to oxidative and thermal damage.

In cosmetics, it acts as a skin conditioner, occlusive, and emollient that give products a rich body.

Concentrations are reported from 0.0004% to 60% with leave-on products going as high as 60% and rinse-off products staying at 8% or below.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review has concluded this ingredient to be safe as used in cosmetics.

This ingredient does have a comedogenic rating of 3, but this doesn't mean a formula with this ingredient will clog pores. Human testing has proved that any finished product with this ingredient won't automatically make you break out; it really comes down to concentration, formula, and your skin.

Since this ingredient is a triglyceride built mostly from C16 and C18 fatty acids, this ingredient may not be fungal acne safe as that falls into the range the Malassezia yeast can metabolize.

Allergy-wise, the proteins responsible for plant food allergies are taken out of the refined oil. This is why reactions to refined oils are rare even from highly allergenic sources like peanut. Well-designed studies have also shown refined peanut oil is safely tolerated by the vast majority of peanut-allergic people.

However, the issue is with unrefined oils; be sure to reach out to the manufacturer if you have a plant food allergy about the type of oil used in their products.

The other catch for this INCI name is that it doesn't tell you which plants are in the blend so you would need to ask the brand.

Zinc Stearate is the metal salt of stearic acid. It is a white solid used to bind, thicken, and lubricate products.

This ingredient is common in powder makeup, where it helps keep the powder together.

This ingredient can be sourced from non-animal or animal sources. It is best to reach out to the brand to see where they source this ingredient from.

Tribehenin is the triglyceride of glycerin and behenic acid. It is an emollient that helps soften and condition skin.

Safety-wise, this is a well-vetted ingredient. Repeated-insult patch tests of 0.38% tribehenin did not trigger sensitization.

This ingredient may not be fungal acne safe because behenic acid falls into the chain-length range that Malassezia yeasts can feed on.

This ingredient comes from a palm tree native to Brazil. This ingredient is used to thicken texture and leaves behind a film when applied.

Preservative

Phenoxyethanol is one of the most widely used preservatives in skincare (and for good reason!).

It has a large spectrum of antimicrobial activity and especially effective bacteria, yeast, and mold while only having a weak effect on your skin's natural microbiome.

On a cellular level, it disrupts the cell membranes of microbes by poking holes that make the cell leak. This shuts down the chemical reactions the microbe needs to make energy so it can no longer survive.

Another perk of this ingredient is that it stays functional across a wide pH range (3-10).

You'll often see it paired with boosters like Ethylhexylglycerin; one study showed that a 1:9 ratio of Ethylhexylglycerin to Phenoxyethanol damages bacterial membranes as effectively as doubling the Phenoxyethanol concentration on its own.

Typical use concentrations range from 0.3-1% depending on the formula, and this ingredient is capped at 1% int the EU.

Safety-wise, the fear mongering does not hold up to the evidence. The EU's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety and FDA consider it safe as a preservative at up to 1%, including for children of all ages.

Adverse systemic effects only showed up in animal studies at exposures roughly 200x higher than what people get from cosmetics. And despite its very widespread use, this ingredient is a rare sensitizer and allergic reactions are uncommon.

It's main function is to add a white color to cosmetics. It can also be mixed with other colors to create different shades.

This ingredient is a combination of red, black, and yellow iron oxide pigments. This combination of colors is usually found in foundation, because it results in a "skin" color.

The EU typically uses CI numbers for colorants when applicable, such as CI 77489. In the US, iron oxides are regulated as color additives and "iron oxides" is the most commonly used name in US cosmetic practice.

A 2021 paper looked at skincare formulations containing iron oxides and found that they reduced transmission of blue light when measured optically. In simple terms, the pigment particles helped block or scatter part of the visible light spectrum in lab testing and the authors suggest this could translate into better protection against blue-light-related skin effects.

In the EU's CosIng database, iron oxides are only listed as a colorant. CosIng groups ingredients by their main cosmetic role, such as colorant, preservative, or UV filter.

Though studies say iron oxides can "attenuate blue light", they're describing an optical property and not an officially recognized cosmetic function.

So CosIng isn’t contradicting the research. It’s just classifying iron oxides by what they officially are: pigments that add color.
