Ingredients Explained

Skin Conditioning

Tallow is the fat of a cow and has occlusive properties, like petrolatum. It is rich in fatty acids like oleic, palmitic, stearic, and linoleic.

Fatty acids are moisturizing ingredients that can help hydrate your skin - they are not the same as exfoliating acids such as AHAs or BHA.

While there are reports that tallow can disrupt your skin barrier, we cannot find sufficient proof of this.

Since tallow is an occlusive, it cannot be used alone as a moisturizer. Occlusives sit on top of skin and lock in the hydration that’s already there (from other ingredients). So using tallow alone will cause skin to dry out.

Due to the high fatty acid content, this ingredient may cause breakouts.

Emollient, Skin Conditioning

Jojoba oil is one of the most well-studied plant-derived ingredients in cosmetics. It is an emollient with a special structure.

Because it is made up of 97-98% wax esters, it closely mirrors the linear monoesters found in human sebum. This makes it skin compatible, non-greasy, and lightweight.

Unlike other plant oils, jojoba wax doesn't easily penetrate skin. It mostly works in the uppermost layers as an emollient. This just means it forms a light barrier on the skin to help retain moisture.

Formulations with jojoba esters up to 90% reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and increased barrier recovery by 81% (outperforming bisabolol at 47%).

Besides barrier support, the science also suggests jojoba to have anti-inflammatory effects and potential applications for skin infections, aging, and wound healing.

Fun fact: Indigenous cultures have used jojoba as a moisturizer and to help treat burns for centuries.

Fungal acne: The Malassezia yeast is known to metabolize fatty acids in the C11-24 range and jojoba's dominant fatty acid components fall into this range. This ingredient may not be fungal acne safe.

Emollient, Skin Conditioning

Canola Oil is a plant-oil and low-erucic-acid variety of rapeseed. Like other seed oils, it functions as an emollient that softens skin and slows water loss.

Its fatty acid profile is mostly linoleic acid (55-65%) with some oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. There are also some small amounts of vitamin E and plant sterols.

The sterol content is pretty interesting:

In a controlled human study, a single application of canola oil and especially its sterol-enriched fraction reduced visible irritation, redness, and water loss caused by SLS. Plain canola oil and most other tested oils did little on healthy, un-irritated skin.

It's pretty much just a calm, moisturizing oil that helps with soothing if your skin is already irritated.

Since canola oil is made up of C18 fatty acids, it may not be fungal acne safe. The Malassezia yeast feeds on chain lengths C11-24.

Fun fact: Canadian growers bred the low-erucic variety in the 1970's, and the name stands for "Canadian oil, Low Acid").

Rosa Damascena Flower Oil is an essential oil made from the Damask Rose. It is often used as a fragrance in cosmetics.

Rose Oil has antibacterial and antioxidant properties due to its terpene, glycoside, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and Vitamin C content.

Other major parts of Rose Oil include citronellol and geraniol. Both of these are known EU allergens and cause contact-allergies.

The downsides of this ingredient outweight the positives.

Matricaria Recutita Flower Oil is from the german Chamomile.

Essential oils from chamomile have been found to improve wound healing due to its antimicrobial properties.

Chamomile is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.
