Glycerin (or glycerol) is a compound naturally found in your skin. It's a powerhouse humectant that pulls water into the stratum corneum.

Topically, glycerin does several things at once:

Arctium Lappa Root Extract is from the burdock plant. It is a botanical extract with skin conditioning and soothing properties.

Burdock root contains polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. This can help explain why it's used to calm irritated or red skin.

Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract comes from the common Marigold plant part of the Asteraceae family. This ingredient is a skin conditioner.

Marigolds contain flavonoids. Flavonoids are a group of substances found naturally in plants. They possess antioxidant and inflammation properties.

This ingredient is also known as Dandelion root extract.

Studies show the leaf, stem, and roots of this plant are rich in antioxidants such as caffeic acid and polysaccharides, which act as humectants to help hydrate the skin.

This resin comes from the myrrh tree native to northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It has skin conditioning properties and brings a few interesting things to the skincare table.

The resin contains sesquiterpenes or compounds that give it antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. One study found the essential oil of this tree provided the best protection against squalene peroxidation. This is when the squalene naturally found in your skin gets oxidized by UV exposure or environmental stressors like pollution.

On the technical side of things, xanthan gum is a polysaccharide - a combination consisting of multiple sugar molecules bonded together.

Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that has germicide, antimicrobial, and aromatic properties. Studies show that phenoxyethanol can prevent microbial growth. By itself, it has a scent that is similar to that of a rose.

It's often used in formulations along with Caprylyl Glycol to preserve the shelf life of products.
