Olivem 1000

Explained

This is not an INCI ingredient but a proprietary name. The duo behind Olivem 1000 are cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate.

It is a PEG-free, oil-in-water emulsifier that self assembles into a structure that mimics your skin's natural lipid organization in the stratum corneum. This means it doesn't only hold water and oil together; it also acts as a mild moisturizer on its own.

A 2023 clinical study found a single application of an Olivem 1000-based emulsion significantly reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and increased skin hydration for up to 10 hours.

It has also been clinically tested as hypoallergenic, has a wide pH range to work with, and is typically used at 2-8% (the higher the percentage, the more "rich" a formula will feel).

Microbiome-friendly certificate

There is a microbiome-friendly claim on OliveM 1000 from MyMicrobiome and Hallstar, the manufacturer. This in-vitro test checks whether a product disrupts the key face microbes (including Malassezia globosa).

Literature shows M. globosa lacks the enzyme needed to metabolize unsaturated fatty acids (including oleic acid or oleate esters).

Always be sure to patch test if you're unsure about an ingredient!
