Methyl alcohol is also known as methanol. In cosmetics, is a solvent and denaturant; denaturants are added to ethyl alcohol to make it unfit for consumption.

According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, this ingredient is safe when used to denature ethanol in cosmetics. Undiluted methanol is an eye and skin irritant.
