Catechol

Explained

Catechol is a naturally occurring compound found in fruits, veggies, and cigarette smoke. It is usually used in the production of perfumes and pharmaceuticals. You'll likely see this ingredient in hair dyes.

This ingredient is considered a skin irritant and using it can lead to dermatitis or other dermal lesions. It is also rapidly absorbed into skin with dermal absorption producing an illness similar to that cause by phenol.

The primary mechanism for skin sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis is caused by catechol-containing compounds oxidize to modify macromolecules.

This ingredient is also known as pyrocatechol or 1,2-dihydroxybenzene.
