What is eczema?

Eczema is an umbrella term for a group of inflammatory skin conditions that cause symptoms like redness, dryness, itchiness, and irritation.

It can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, can significantly impact quality of life.

There are seven main types of eczema, each with different causes, triggers, and patterns:

  1. atopic dermatitis
  2. contact dermatitis
  3. dyshidrotic eczema
  4. nummular eczema
  5. seborrheic dermatitis
  6. stasis dermatitis
  7. neurodermatitis

It is important to not self-diagnose because eczema can look similar to other skin conditions, such as rosacea or psoriasis.

A healthcare provider or dermatologist can examine your skin, ask about your symptoms and lifestyle, and recommend treatments tailored to your specific case. This might include moisturizers, topical steroids, antihistamines, or lifestyle changes.
