CI 45430

Explained

CI 45430, also known as Erythrosine / RED NO. 3, is a synthetic red colorant. It was already banned in US cosmetics in 1990 and was recently banned in US food and drugs in January 2025. However, it remains permitted in EU cosmetics (except in hair dyes).

This dye belongs to a class of colorants called xanthene dyes and is made using a compound called fluorescein.

FDA Ban?

There are some conflicting regulatory stances at the time of writing:
The European SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) evaluated it and concluded it is not genotoxic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic based on the data they reviewed. They also deemed it safe for use as a colorant in toothpaste at a maximum concentration of 0.0025%.

The story is different in the US; the FDA banned the use of CI 45430 in cosmetics and externally applied drugs back in 1990. You shouldn't be encountering this ingredient at all if you're shopping for cosmetics in the US.
