Factors of aging

Skin aging is a complex process influenced by a myriad of factors.

The signs of aging can be attributed to:

  1. The loss of Collagen and Elastin: Collagen and elastin provide structural support and elasticity to the skin. The production of these decrease as we age.

  2. Reduced hydration: Our skin is able to hold onto less moisture as we age. Reduced hydration levels can contribute to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  3. Sun Damage: This is the biggest external factor related to aging. UV exposure from the sun accelerates the skin's aging process. UV radiation damages collagen, elastin, and skin DNA.

  4. Free Radical Damage: Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage skin cells and accelerate aging. Factors such as pollution, smoking, and UV exposure can increase the production of free radicals in the skin.

  5. Genetics: Genetic factors play a significant role in how your faces ages.

  6. Facial Expressions: Smiling, squinting, or furrowing the brow can lead to the formation of wrinkles. Any repetitive facial movements can lead to the formation of wrinkles.

  7. Lifestyle Habits: Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor nutrition affect the appearance of your skin.

  8. Hormonal Changes: Changing hormone levels, particularly during menopause or andropause, affect your skin's structure. Changing hormones leads to dryness, thinning, and loss of elasticity.
